Running Red - by Amy Smith

Before February arrived, I had been pondering how to design my posts for Healthy Heart Month. By today, the 2nd day, my composing buttons are still STUCK.

It was this evening on Facebook that I read my friend Amy's blog posting titled 'Running Red'. I knew then that I was going to post a link to her posting so my readers could go there directly.

Each time I read Amy's postings I am touched inwardly and usually humbled by God's life within her and her humble, expressive way of describing things in life. Just an ordinary life but not an ordinary life. For me, being the mother of 5 children under the age of 10 would not be ordinary! But she does it magnificently and so gracefully and allows the rest of us inside her home, her children's lives and her heart........to see our Maker's influence in 7 precious souls..........all in a day in the Smith Family home.

Okay, back to her posting........read it for yourself and allow God to visit with you as you do. Be open.

Perhaps you too will want to become a 'follower' of her blog.

Too, if you see her running red in the streets of Ontario Oregon, maybe roll down your window, smile, wave and say, 'Go Run Red Amy, Go Run Red!'

And lastly, perhaps.......could it be so........that the healthiest heart is actually the surrendered one?..........

Fitness guru Jack LaLanne dies at 96

While we all have our own preferences and levels by which we move our bodies and exercise, Jack is an inspiration and will continue to be a legend and example for all of us.

I believe that Jack lived out well my following quote:  "Wellness is about TOTAL YOU; but it is not achieved by accident...just picking the dimension of wellness that you like and minimizing the others doesn't work in the long run. Optimal lifestyle wellness begins with a conscious, intentional decision/choice to assume responsibility for the quality of your life. It may mean raising your standards above what you have been comfortable with; it will require time, commitment, energy, motivation and attitude. "

How To Bike With Your Dog

I am sure there are many articles written on 'How To Bike With Your Dog' however mine is personal and recent and I want to share it with you.

If you are like me and are a dog lover, you don't want to leave your furry buddy at home while you are out exercising and he/she certainly doesn't want to be left at home. Creating a healthy, active lifestyle for yourself and your dog is a great way to keep you both happy, heart-healthy and trim.

Thus, the great invention of the Walky Dog Bike Leash!

This is the packaging but shows a good photo of the actual item in use.
The great thing about the leash is that it can be used for all sizes of dogs and all bikes!

For small dogs like my beagle, remove 2 of the 3 springs that are contained within the cyclinder. For medium dogs, remove 1 of the 3. And for large dogs, don't remove any springs. By removing the springs, it causes more length of leash to be exposed - to attach to the dogs collar or harness.

The Instructions on the reverse of the package summarize the item.

What I REALLY appreciated about the product was that the instructions were very clear and simple.  Not being mechanically or technically-inclined, I was able to attach the fixing jaw and connectors quickly and easily. In my books, it is 'Girl-Friendly' and I felt great that I didn't need my husband to help me :-)

And the one for whom it was intended gave it a 'paw up' as well

Notice the space/distance between the bike and the dog.

Our Beagle, Bailey is a natural 'puller' so the WalkyDog Bike Leash is a great training tool for him to learn to submit and obey and not be the one in charge

This is our 2nd week training with Bailey and he still will pull if he sees a dog or cat, however with the weight of the bike and the rider, the dog soon realize that 'resistance is futile' and he quickly falls into line.

Special THANKS to my husband, Bob & Bailey the Beagle :-)

If you purchase a WalkyDog Bike Leash, please share your experience with us by posting in the comments section or emailing me : pawzitivefx@gmail.com

Prevention & Lifestyle Wellness in 2011

It was 2004 when prompted by then Editor of Canada's Healthy Living Guide, Sandra Tonn, that I wrote my very first article. It was supposed to be short, concise and 700 words. I couldn't do it! I had so much to say about Lifestyle Wellness and Prevention that it turned out to be a very loooooooooooong article. Although it was not eligible to be published, I am very proud of that article as it says everything that I am standing for and promoting as Health Adventure Coach. In summing up prevention, I've said it like this:

"Wellness is about TOTAL YOU; but it is not achieved by accident...just picking the dimension of wellness that you like and minimizing the others doesn't work in the long run. Optimal lifestyle wellness begins with a conscious, intentional decision/choice to assume responsibility for the quality of your life. It may mean raising your standards above what you have been comfortable with; it will require time, commitment, energy, motivation and attitude."

I encourage each of you to peruse my site, read the articles, click on the links and decide how you are going to take some Conscious, Intentional and Responsible Actions towards preventing dis-ease and poor health in your life (spirit, mind and body) in 2011. Let's have a consultation so you can gain some new or perhaps different perspectives and insights on ways you can begin doing this. Let's team up in 2011! Remember that Lifestyle Wellness = A Marriage of Health + Vitality.

Is this you? It CAN be you!

"I will not die an unlived life; I will not live in fear of falling or catching fire. I choose to inhabit my days, to allow my living to open me, to make me less afraid, More accessible, to loosen my heart until it becomes a wing, a torch, a promise. I choose to risk my significance, To live so that which came to me as seed goes to the next as blossom, And that which came to me as blossom, goes on as fruit."

Fruit & Turkey Salad With Zesty Berry Marinade

Yesterday morning upon arising, the temperature here in Winter Haven, FL was a freezing 30 F, with frost covering everything.

It was the second morning in a row with such temps, except the previous day, it was 33 F when I awoke.

This is the vapor on the pond behind our home.
Everything was still and almost silent at sunrise except for the ducks still swimming & feeding in the pond.

Well, with such a nippy morning, I desired something zesty and zippy to start my morning with. Yesterday at the outdoor produce market near CR540A near the Lakeland/Bartow Border, I picked up a delicious pineapple for $1.99 and pears for $0.99/lb and I also had leftover turkey in the fridge and a bit of remaining mixed-berry fruit puree we had made for our French Toast on Christmas morning.

The majority of the time I invent my own meals or modify recipes I have or even google a few ingredients that I have on hand and see what delicious, healthy recipe appears. And from there, modify to what appeals to my taste buds :-).

So, with that said, here is my December 29, 2010 Invention:

Fruit & Turkey Salad With Zesty Berry Marinade

Main Ingredients: (You may choose the variety of fruit depending upon the season or availability as well as the choice of protein)
  • 3 Spears Fresh Pineapple
  • 1 Medium Fresh Bartlett Pear
  • 1 Medium Fresh Orange
  • 1 Medium Ripe Banana
  • 1 Cup Cooked Turkey
Step 1: Cut fruit and turkey into bitesize pieces and place in a bowl.

Marinade Ingredients: (you choose quantity for your own taste preferences)
  • Mixed Berry Puree
  • Apple Cider
  • Balsamic Vinegar
  • Cold-Pressed Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Step 3: Put above ingredients into a shaker cup (instead of a blender which can produce too much froth) and shake until all are blended evenly. Pour liberally and immediately over the fruit/turkey combo mix (decide quantity depending upon taste preference).

1.5 TBSP Freshly Ground Flax Seeds - Flax seeds can be ground in a coffee grinder or blender. Flax seeds are high in fiber, omega-3 fatty acids and phytochemicals (compounds produced by plants) called lignans (phytoestrogens)

Step 4: Sprinkle over top of Main Ingredients after pouring on the marinade.

  • Berry Blend - I used strawberries, blackberries and added blueberries from another source.
Step 2: Place 1 Cup of Frozen Berries into blender with approximately 1/2 Cup of hot water and pulse the contents until pureed.

  • Apple Cider (not apple juice) - approximately 1 part to every 3 parts Berry Puree

  • Balsamic Vinegar - approximately 1 part to every 3 parts Berry Puree

  • Cold-Pressed Extra Virgin Olive Oil - approximately 1 part to each 3 parts of Berry Puree

  • Garnish with 1 TBSP Fresh Picked Spearmint Leaves and eat immediately.
